Antony Price, Famed for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the visionary style architect responsible for some of the most iconic looks associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
Price was best known for his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the light-hued ensembles that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
Price's death comes just weeks after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress that paid homage to the notorious black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with outfits on model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including several ensembles for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
- Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
- Dramatic Impact: Defining an era of music fashion.
- Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
- Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.
The fashion world mourns the loss to a authentic original whose legacy on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
