Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.
“Still unsure,” he added. “However, I can share, from our conversation, he seemed very positive. Furthermore, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
Authorities shared surveillance images earlier this week of an individual wanted in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is still being looked into and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday morning in the area between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, according to authorities. The assailant escaped.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a baby.
“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was expected to be a key part of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a practice session on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd continued to be present during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
