The vehicles for the 2026 season are designed to be more compact, agile and eco-conscious compared to current models.

The world of Formula 1 has unveiled the official vocabulary that will be used to describe the advanced features of its new 2026 regulations.

The championship is embarking on what is arguably the largest technical shift in its long history starting in 2026, featuring new chassis and engine rules and the required adoption of eco-friendly fuels.

The revised engines, which keep the 1.6-litre V6 turbo hybrid, boast a significantly increased electrical capacity, necessitating major innovations in the vehicles' aerodynamic design.

Throughout races, drivers will carefully oversee battery power – sometimes even hot laps – to achieve the best result.

Extensive fan consultation were carried out with a wide range of fans, including long-time followers and newcomers, to identify which phrases would make things clearer of the main elements of the 2026 changes.

The primary aim was to make a range of advanced features of the competition as straightforward as possible for the global fanbase.

Consequently, initial designations for specific components – such as "alphabetical mode names" for the moveable wings – have been abandoned in favour of descriptive names that directly explain the actual function of the system.

What's the New Technology?

Regulators explain that racers will have greater control to determine tactics regarding power usage, regeneration, and conservation.

The upcoming changes introduce a set of functions that will be shown on broadcast screens to enhance the audience's understanding of the race battle.

  • Attack Mode: This supersedes the present overtaking aid. It provides a burst of extra electrical energy accessible when a competitor is less than a second the vehicle in front to assist with an overtaking maneuver.
  • Power Mode: This is a on-demand battery discharge from the ERS that can be used in offensive or defensive moves. It provides the driver maximum power at the click of a switch.

Both of these strategic tools will have to be deployed strategically, as the overall battery capacity is restricted.

  • Active Aero: Both the nose and rear wings move automatically – spreading on the straights for low aerodynamic resistance and increased velocity, and closing in the turns for optimal cornering performance.
  • Battery Recharge: The system can replenish their battery with power recovered from braking, or during coasting at the conclusion of a straight or in sections where only limited engine output is applied.

Car Design Evolution

The next-generation machines will be reduced in size and weight relative to current models, with a wheelbase cut by 200mm to 3,400mm, overall width narrowed by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the minimum weight decreased by 30kg.

Cumulative downforce is anticipated to be reduced by approximately fifteen to thirty percent, although squads will undoubtedly recover some as they refine their designs.

Drag has been cut by 40%. The cars will employ active aerodynamics – front and rear wings will open on the straight sections to cut resistance and enhance velocity and click back into place for peak handling.

Pirelli tyres will continue to use the current rim size, but the tyres themselves will be narrower, by 25mm at the front and three centimetres on the rear.

Power Unit Revolution

The 2026 engines will have an approximate 50-50 split in horsepower generated by the ICE and the electrical system, up from about 20% battery contribution in the current formula.

The ERS setup is made less complex through the deletion of the MGU-H, the complicated and costly component that recovered energy from the turbo.

All vehicles will be obliged to compete on carbon-neutral fuel, produced using biomass or synthetic production methods.
