Known as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances remembered him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She told the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the attack. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
