Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was convicted of planning a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the arrest, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his escape.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, his son Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to fight with us."

Context of Sentencing

He was convicted of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, many his backers attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, Brasília.

The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the time, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the court case a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
