The Former French President to Pen Prison Memoir Documenting Two Dozen Days Incarcerated
The ex-president of France will soon publish a book next month titled Notes from a Cell, which recounts his experience endured in custody.
The revelation was made just 11 days after the former president gained freedom as he contests the court ruling on charges of illegal collaboration in a case to secure election campaign funds provided by the regime of the late Libyan dictator.
Prison Experience: Personal Reflections
“Inside jail there is nothing to see, with little to occupy time,” he reflects in a preview, suggesting the account will focus on his musings while in isolation rather than wider commentary of the packed and crisis-hit correctional facilities in the country.
“I forget silence, not present in that facility, where there is endless commotion,” he continues. “The noise persists relentlessly. However, akin to empty spaces, personal reflection grows stronger while incarcerated.”
Release Hearing: Recounting the Hardship
During his plea for freedom, the former leader was present via screen from inside the facility, depicting prison life as exhausting. He had told the court: “I want to pay tribute the correctional officers, who are exceptionally humane, and who have made this ordeal tolerable – since it’s deeply troubling.”
“I didn’t expect that at 70 years of age, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a trial I must endure. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, it’s very hard. It has an impact every inmate because it’s gruelling.”
Unprecedented Situation
Sarkozy, the ex-head of state from 2007 to 2012, set a precedent as former head in the European Union and the first leader since WWII in the French Republic to serve time in prison.
Prior to imprisonment he declared he intended to spend the period to write a book.
Books in Prison
Unconfirmed is if he found the opportunity to review and analyze the volumes he had in his cell: a two-volume biography of Jesus together with Dumas’s work the famous story, where an innocent man is imprisoned but escapes to exact retribution.
Daily Reality
The former leader was held secluded to protect him in a cell of about nine sq metres with his own shower and toilet at La Santé prison in the city. Guards stayed in a neighbouring cell.
Sources mentioned that he had eaten just yogurt while inside due to concerns any food could have been tampered with. Although he had access for self-catering but he turned this down, according to reports. Unclear remains if the memoir includes his dietary choices.
Legal Perspective
His attorney, who visited his client every day while he was in prison, told the release hearing security would be better outside jail compared to inside. “There were death threats, listened to yells during nighttime and emergency responses in an adjacent room as a detainee harmed themselves.”
Charges and Sentence
He entered custody in late October when the judiciary imposed a five-year sentence on conspiracy charges over a scheme to acquire election financing for his presidential bid.
He disputes the charges and has appealed against the verdict, with a new trial set for the coming spring.
