The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any prominent awards ceremony nears, one notices an outcry to include of new categories to honor unsung work and delight the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request is the most urgent and significant. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of video games, showing incredible range they barely qualify as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications actually cover many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
