The Mayor-Elect states his intention to reside in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point throughout his campaign.
An Iconic Home
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for most New York City mayors from the post-war period.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a core platform, hesitated to declare his residency plans right away after his triumph in November.
"My choice came down to keeping my family safe and the importance of directing all of my focus on enacting the agenda for affordability voters voted for," Mamdani said in a statement.
A Fond Farewell
He resided in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district famous for its abundance of immigrant communities and global cuisine.
"To the people of Astoria: thank you for exemplifying what is great about New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"While I may no longer live there, it will forever remain within me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.
Campaign Controversy
Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani connected his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.
However his opponents, mainly ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the rent-stabilized unit although he hails from a prominent family.
A House Not Always Used
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his private home on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.
Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a venue for official events, and championed an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting a stark contrast to his previous Astoria apartment.
Featuring pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home with views of the East River.
Within, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished in the spirit of the home's historical period.
The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter what people claim," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, a policy where the city regulates on how much building managers can hike the monthly cost each year.
Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses rises faster than the average income.
Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
