The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Incorrect Popular RPG Show Song
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, revealed an exciting introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at multiple agonizing backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
All in all, the opening looks stunning. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.
This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece from the soundtrack album of that title, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental choice, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its inclusion.
But for me, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that accompanied the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Of course, the creators has stated that the series will have some changes and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be released on the streaming service from November 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of the second series, the actual play are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
