The Showrunner Discloses He Has a Plan for How Pluribus Will Conclude... Currently.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that Pluribus would emerge as a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I did not foresee the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed sci-fi show reaching its finale—and Season 2 already in development—the writers' room opened up about the fan response and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
About the Overwhelming Fan Response
Anyone might to get swayed by the rampant praise and online debates surrounding Pluribus. The creator is striving to steer clear of all that.
“It's like being an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.
“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by audience chatter.”
“It's wiser to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.
A Pressing Query: Has Vince Gilligan See the Ending of Pluribus?
Considering the writers aren’t being guided by fan response, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… sort of.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “yet we stand ready to throw out a good idea for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if they hit a wall, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
