Why Los Blancos Possess 'Total Faith' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch
When an teenage makes Real Madrid history in a key European match against City, it inevitably draws praise and the spotlight.
During his maiden start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil round of 16 first leg lead at the Bernabeu.
The young player, who also had his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English champions in the midweek return to secure a last eight place.
At 18 years old, Pitarch was the team's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's record by 10 days.
Rapid Ascent Through The Academy
This talent is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.
He joined Madrid from Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico Madrid and Getafe youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
He worked his way up to the reserve side and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then coached by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and drive he brought to the team.
'His Best Attribute Remains His Personality'
In the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso called up the youngster to train with the first team and gave him playing time during the warm-up matches.
However, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.
"I've dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the first day I began playing the game, every day you go to train and every day you play a match," said Pitarch following his first appearance.
"I've just achieved my dream with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."
Given a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he spent four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as injuries to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opportunity.
Pitarch has taken it with displays that have defied his youth and experience.
"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe his capabilities," said the coach. "He's incredibly dynamic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and mobility."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His greatest quality is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He constantly demands the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I understand fans might be surprised to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to do what he usually does.
"He will continue to get chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before joining the club's famous youth academy.
He possesses dual Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the option to play for either country at the highest level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent different countries at youth level without being permanently tied, with the final decision only binding once they play in a official senior international match.
Pitarch has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to any full national side, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.
In a recent interview, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my ultimate choice so far. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I will reach a conclusion in the near future."
This scenario echoes that of other bi-national talents such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. While 18-year-old Lamine chose La Roja, Diaz decided to represent Morocco.
Focus on the Future
At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.
He played 74 minutes in the two-one win at City, which sealed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the team chase future success.
Following his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to be a central figure in that.
"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We deal with it very normally. I attempt not to overanalyze it too much - I have to earn my playing time on the field," he commented after the success at Manchester.
